Generating Revenue From Your Site In A Recession

February 1st, 2009 · 15 Comments · Topics Of Interest

Some of you may have already seen your revenue take a plunge. So far, mine’s been holding but I don’t earn anything to bother writing about really, so it could simply be an anomaly. But any day now, mine could plummet and I’ll be back at square one with regards to my web marketing efforts.

So what’s the plan? Well let’s look at the situation, we have advertisers that don’t want to spend much and when they do, they’re going to want it to pay dividends now, not a year down the road. The smart businesses will still invest well in advertising, but given the nature of many web advertisers, long range thinking isn’t going to be a priority for them. That means that the overall pool of advertisers will drop. So have a quick peek at where your revenue is coming from. Are the advertisers from disposable, flash in the pan companies or are they from businesses with a brand to defend? The former are going to be volatile for a while. The later, a bit more stable. What advertisers you’ve attracted will have a lot to do with who your site(s) are targeted to.

So one way to survive is consider shifting into more traditional advertising spaces. Keep in mind here that I’m talking about web based traditional as opposed to bricks and mortar traditional. That’s if you’re interested in an immediate runaround. If, on the other hand, you’re looking to exploit the situation to try to cash in when things turn around, then there’s a simple strategy. It’s similar to the strategy that Buffett’s been exploiting for decades. Run towards the fire if there’s value in there.

When things are bad in an industry, everyone bails. That leaves fantastic discounts to be had. So you can approach this two ways. Either you can simply go out and buy web properties that have tanking revenue and simply be the one willing to wait it out, or you go about it on your own and start up in a segment that’s hurting now, but will bounce back once the overall economy turns around. That way when things start to pick up, you’re going to at the forefront and will cash in bigger and faster than the rest of the crowd.

You have options. Everyone’s going to scramble differently as the sources of revenue dry up, but those with a plan will come out the other end laughing while others will be kicking themselves. Which will you be?

My earnings have gone through the floor already, not surprising really as Dubai appears to be in free fall.

Following Buffet is always a good idea, if you have the financial reserves to tide you over, and fund the purchase of distressed assets.

But you need to be careful and buy something only if you’re absolutely sure it’s going to appreciate after the recession. Assuming there is an end to this recession. :)

I like the approach of playing develop and plan for capitalizing on a dying market and waiting out the competition. Seriously bad times can only last so long. We might as well wait it out and capitalize on the good times ahead.

If you have any domains sitting around not doing anything you you can park them with companies like Sedo and earn free money. I did it a few years ago but you have to be careful not to send any non-organic links. If you are going to do it well then you should have SEO on your domain names. Most domain parking companies let you add the domain parking in a i-frame so you can optimise the page. Speak to your web designer about it or look for a search engine optimisation company using google.

ive seen google revenues fall 90% for some people yet the cost to advertise with them remains the same

I would say do your own thing rather than put money into somebody else’s web enterprise. Good work will always pay and this recession is bound to turn around sooner than later. By that time with good hours put in, one should be ready to rake in. Patience is the key word right now

I agree with your thought (or is it Buffet’s) on “buying discounted assets” in down time. Usually the value will go up when the dust settles…..

And that’s what exactly I’ve been doing now…. buy, hold and flip….

If we give a correct and genuine advertisements to the products which we sale on to we can have good sales and can get profits more.

Completely agree! Its a tough world now but everyone should just hold on to their faith and everything will turn out okay!

My revenue is down more than 30 percent. Adsense earnings are down more than 50 percent but the adwords cost is not down even half of that.

    Good Morning All.
Well i must say, my Ads are down quite a bit, but my site is signing up people from all over the place!
It seems that the recession is fueling my site!
I run http://www.masqueradinghearts.com online dating and things are going very well for me, it might be because people get deprest or just cant afford going out to meet people;) but what ever the cause it’s working ;)
So thank you to all the lonely people of the word.

  • Niche Affiliate Marketing

Overall, my online income isn’t down too much. It really depends on what niche you’re working within.

Obviously, sales of luxury items are down so anything in that niche will continue to suffer. Things that will save a buyer money or give comfort in tight times, are doing well though.

I don’t do AdWords PPC so I can’t really comment on that. I just do affiliate marketing etc in small niche categories using organic search engine traffic.

    Great post! Better site!

What theme is this (assuming you’re using Wordpress)? I love how simple and clean it is!

    Keep up the good work!
