Some Time ago, I mentioned that I had bought myself a Vox VR30. I’ve now spent a while with the Vox VR30 and now feel like I have enough experience with it to give it a bit of a review.
If you want a good clean sound, this amp is awesome. The clean that comes out of the VR30 is just right. I don’t have a whole lot of experience with different amps, but I know that I love the clean that comes out of my little Vox. There’s a bit of a background hum, but that’s nothing that can’t be fixed by playing louder
The VR30 also has 2 types of distortion. One is, for lack of a better word, very metal. It tries to be heavy and give you huge distortion. Unfortunately I’m not sure any of you who are into that kind of sound would think much of it. I listen to a bit of heavy music and it’s just not quite right. The other distortion channel though gives a really nice amount of break-up as you crank it louder and play harder. Very 70’s ish to my ear and I love it. It really sounds just the way I would like it to. I would like to note that these are all personal preferences and that you should probably go try out an amp before you buy it. That being said, for the sound, this amp is awesome and was a steal at under $200 CAD after taxes.
Now for the bad part though. The build quality is terrible. Unfortunately, you do get what you pay for. At under $200, they can reproduce great sounds, but you just can’t put in the nuts and bolts that make it feel solid. It hasn’t failed on me at any point, but the jacks all feel very cheap and flimsy and the fabric covering the speaker is falling appart after a piece of plastic warped badly due to 1 day’s exposure to sunlight through a window. The plastic is was keeps the fabric taught and when it warped, it bent outward releasing its hold on a portion of the fabric, leaving it hanging by a few threads. It doesn’t affect sound quality but it sure doesn’t loo pretty. I suspect that I wouldn’t have these kinds of problems had I spent $2500 on and amp, but then again I didn’t have $2500.
Overall, the sound quality is right where I was hoping it would be. The background hum is bearable, but the build quality isn’t. If you’re just using it around the house as a practice amp like I am it’s not an issue. Just don’t show it to anyone once it starts falling appart on you
