Why Traditional News Doesn’t Get It

June 10th, 2008 · 11 Comments

It’s been said before that the traditional news sources, newspapers, TV, etc… don’t understand why millennials are turning away from traditional sources and watching things like John Stewart instead. Well it’s gone even further now. My wife is now getting better information from watching The View than I can gather from CNN. I get my “real” information from Reddit and use The Daily Show/The Colbert Report as a supplement. So why is that?

Well here’s one reason. This isn’t on the news anywhere on TV. But this is on the front page. A rant about voting on a Saturday instead of a Tuesday certainly is newsworthy on a day when nothing else is going on and you need to fill space. But today, there are articles of impeachment against a sitting US president out on the table. There seems to be a lack of understanding with regards to what is news and what isn’t.

We’re not immune to this issue on Canadian networks either. We’re a bit better at it, but we’re still not innocent either. When I watch Newsnet or something else like that, most of the stories are pretty relevant. Those that seem a little out there tend to be “feel good” fluff pieces rather than the Hollywood rag bits that fill US airtime.

It certainly begs the question as to whether or not it’s even possible to get something even remotely close to balanced, relevant information. I don’t know that we ever could, but I can’t help but feel that we should be able to, somehow…

I think it has more to do with the instantaneous nature of new media. Print magazines have a dealy time of at least 24 hours, and they have editoral guidelines and stuff, which further reduces the things they can write about. Makes it kind of outdated and ‘non-controversial’.

It seems that news has got worse. I think news is now based on the audience and the media give what they want. News about big brother, Amy Winehouse going into rehab, to me it is more like gossip news than actual real useful and political news. I don’t ever watch the news and half the time the papers are crap because they twist stories. I think everyone would be alot smarter and alot more down to earch if something useful was said, rather than living in the dreamland of what dress Paris Hilton was wearing on the red carpet that night.

    I couldn’t agree more

Its mainly because bad news sells. No one wants to hear about someone saving an old veteran they would rather hear about gruesome murder and this as a result adds a large bias to the way in which news is reported

I’m with you on this one. I stopped watching mainstream news when I moved to the Philippines and thank goodness for that. Google News alone is more reliable and you can get both sides of a story, not just one.

By the way, your blog is being added to www.untwistedvortex.com/do-follow-commentluv-keywordluv-blog-list/ — Thanks!

Traditional news just feed you what they want, new media is interactive, is “the sharper and faster relative” and it’s become like this just because of its interactive character, in my opinion. People have their say instantly, so people feel it more theirs.

Personally, I think BBC and NPR are the closest we’ve got to real, unbiased media

Well, i think BBC is fairly unbiased and presents all the relevant news. Today, most of the traditional news sources are more or less biased due to some factors, to get easy success in this world of cut-throat competition. Google news too has good content to tell people.

Im laughing at the post above the BBC is fairly unbaised, i think everynews channel has some bias running through them, some more extreme than others, I mean come on if news was unbiased it would be boring and no one would watch it

Its mostly because awful news advertise. No one needs to listen to about someone saving an old veteran they would fairly listen to about gruesome kill and this as a effect adds a huge prejudice to the way in which news is reported.

If you’re looking for balanced news, i’m sorry to tell you this but it doesn’t exist. Fox news ( the channel that claims to be “fair and balanced”) is the most unbalanced news channel in existence. It’s best just to get your news from different outlets and just try to make the best of it.
