East Coast Music

April 6th, 2008 · 8 Comments · Halifax

It’s time for another piece in my running series on East Coast music. Today, I present Wintersleep, singing their latest awesome song, Weighty Ghost.

I first heard Wintersleep a few years ago on the radio with their song Orca. It’s a more dramatic song, with some pretty heavy instrumentation that tends to turn off some people (read my wife). Here’s a live cut of it:

The radio cut seems to be a lot longer than this one too. That’s why this one never really seemed to take off, but Weighty Ghost has been a hit with everyone I know who’s heard it so far. I really like the rootsy, clapping and acoustic guitar in it. I’ve been enjoying stripped down songs more and more as time goes by. It leaves more room for the vocals and the actual song itself. It sort of puts it out there on display. That can be a bad thing for some songs, but nothing beats a great song that’s stripped down to the basics.

If you like them, pick up an album at their website. They’re a great local band that’s only getting better. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the latest album. You can find a few videos of stuff from their second album on Youtube if you want to hear more. I pretty much love them all, but that certainly doesn’t mean you will : )
