When we moved in to our house, we found ourselves quite fortunate since the previous owner had set up all kinds of lighting for the outdoors. Apparently the owner’s brother was an electrician and had wired the place up. Over the last bunch of years, I’ve learned a few things about outdoor lighting.
First of all, outdoor lighting can really beautify your home, especially if you highlight the really nice aspects of your landscape. We’ve got a beautiful tree in our front yard that has a couple of accent lights putting just enough light to light up the base of the tree and allow a few rays to shine up through the branches. It’s not a lot of light and that was some great planning on their part. You don’t want to be blinding your neighbours as they try to sleep.
Something you’re going to have to watch out for is replacing bulbs. I have a few bulbs that are out right now and the fixtures don’t really seem to lend themselves well to opening. I’m sure they do open, but not easily. So consider that when you pick out your outdoor lighting.
One other important component is timers. Timers make a huge difference. It lets you have a completely hands off system. That way there’s no need to remember to turn them off or on. It makes a huge difference, not only with the convenience of a system like this, but also with the amount of electricity you’re going to use. There’s probably no need to keep the lights on past your bedtime for example.
Speaking of bedtime, that’s one other great side benefit of accent lighting on your property. It provides that extra ambient light that you need to find your keys, or avoid that present the neighbour’s dog left on your driveway. Overall, I’ve found the outdoor lights at our house to be a great benefit. Now if I can only open them up to replace the bulbs…

You might also want to consider installing some solar energy panels to power the lighting. Not only do you reduce your bills, but you can also do your bit to reduce global warming. Besides, there’s a federal tax rebate for installing a solar powered device.

I really like the idea of timers. I often forget to turn off the outdoor lights when I go to bed. I always feel bad because I am wasting electricity, but it’s not because I mean to. The timers could be a big help to me.

Outdoor lighting really does make a big difference. We recently added a lot of lighting to the front. It really stands out. I’m hoping to work on the back this summer.
:O)

Yes it would make a huge difference if you had timers installed.

For help seeing in the dark, wouldn’t be easier to just have motion activated lights?
