Finding Content For Your Website

November 9th, 2006 · 2 Comments · Web Development

When I speak to people who are interested in the web and web technologies, I often ask if they have a website of their own. A surprising amount of them don’t. To me it’s a bit like being a mechanic without a car, a chef with no kitchen, a gardener with no garden. Not that I fault anyone for this, I simply find it surprising. The most common reason for them not having a website is that they don’t know what they would make a website about.

If they seem like they really are just missing that piece of the puzzle, I try to help them along, asking what their hobbies and interests are. These are an amazing source of really good website ideas. But often times that’s still a bit of a tall hurdle as it encompasses a significant amount of knowledge that they possess and they’re not really sure how to get started. I then suggest starting with a blog and add that they just write about whatever they feel like writing about when they sit down to write. Soon, the blog will take on an identity and you’ll know what to write about. But for those who see even this as too dauting a task for their creativity, I have found inspiration and direction.

Today I read a fantastic blog entry titled How To Be Interesting by Russel Davies. If you’ve ever struggled to find content for a blog, read this post. It’s just that simple. If you try some of the things he discusses you should be able to find things to talk about very easily.

Come to think of it, I think all bloggers should read this article. You may already be doing some of the things he discusses. You may not like some of the things he suggests. But whatever you do, go read the post. It’s well written and will hopefully broaden your perspective of what it is that you’re writting and how you go about it.

  • Magazines Are Wicked

[...] I love magazines . They are my favorite thing to pick up when I’m in an explorative mood. In my post about content for your website there’s a reference to a wodnerful post by Russel Davies where he suggests, “Every week, read a magazine you’ve never read before”. Checking out a magazine subscription website could help give you a good idea of the breadth of stuff that’s out there. [...]
