First Post From A Mac

November 29th, 2007 · 5 Comments · Web Development

I’ve finally converted. While I’ve spent time administering an OSX Server, often using a mini, but I’ve had very limited exposure to using as a regular machine. While there’s a lot to get used to and I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface, I’m starting to get it. I haven’t switched before since it hadn’t been convenient and nobody could really effectively communicate why it was that much better than Windows.

I’m starting to get it. Leopard has a virtual desktop app called Spaces. I like virtual desktops but haven’t used them since I got tired of apt-getting and compiling stuff on Linux. This one has at least one feature that I love already.

In general I have found windowing to work poorly on Macs. Maybe it’s just the way I am, but I’ve not been a fan over the years. Spaces offers a way out for me though. I can maximize a few windows that I like to keep in a pretty big state and toss those each in a virtual space. That way they each have their own neat and tidy space. But the cool part was when I accidentally clicked the e-mail icon despite having it already open. I assumed it was then going to churn away and open a new window in my current desktop. I was wrong.

Much to my pleasant surprise, it actually switched over to the space that had the e-mail app open. Now that was cool. I’m starting to see the small subtleties that Apple’s so well known for. That’s exactly why people couldn’t identify just what it was that they preferred. It’s not one big thing, it’s a whole bunch of little things. I can’t wait to find at least a hundred more of these nice subtleties.

Oh yeah and the magnetic power adapter is pure genius.

Glad to hear that the Mac is working well for you. I am hoping that soon I can get away from the dreaded Windows machine… or at least that they fix Vista

I don’t think they’ll be able to “fix” Vista. The problems are extensive. The move to my new Mac gets better with every hour that I use it. The details are well done :)

If I didn’t have to use my pc for so many things right now I would use my mac exclusively. I enjoy Leopard so much, it pains me to get in and use XP anymore.

I have no intention of using Vista…so maybe I’ll become a Mac guy yet…lol.

Overall I’m thoroughly impressed so far. If you can make the switch James, I highly encourage you to.

I’ve been toying with the idea of moving to Mac for some while. I’m coming across posts now about Vista SP1 and IE8 – while still wondering if IE7 is ever going to work? Macs always appear so stable and Leopard looks really usable. A small push and I will jump.
