While checking my backlinks for About A Webmaster on my Google Analytics account, I found that someone has used and referenced my work over at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I’ve had people point to my work before for a high school class, but this is the first time someone has used some of my writings at a level above high school. The best part is that it’s in reference to my article about web audiences which I personally like. Don’t get me wrong, I like all of the articles I post, but I deffinitely have my favourites
I’ve now spent over a week with Google Analytics and it’s been both really good and really bad. The good is that it does seem to gather 90% or more of the information that I wanted out of a good stats package. The bad is that because it’s targeted towards a fairly broad community, with much of that community being commercial websites with a sales processing page as a major funnel. About A Webmaster doesn’t really have that kind of funnel, making some of the features clunky and awkward. Sometimes there are too many ways to get places. For example, there are at least four different ways to get to your list of referrers, but finding the full URLs is only possible in one of the views. Otherwise, you only get domains of the referrers.
All that said, if you’re not that interested in setting up your own stats package or are less technically inclined, Google Analytics is a pretty easy way to process your stats and (eventually) get to all the information you need.
