Car Insurance For Small Businesses

For small business owners, there are a lot of things that cross over from their personal life into their business life. I know it’s happened for me and I’m sure it happens for many others. Sometimes that’s no problem such as using a room in your house as an office. In other cases though, there’s an issue such as hoping that your insurance will cover you for business purposes.

One of the first things I read about having a home business is that you have to look into your insurance situation to make sure that you’re covered. One of the insurances that you have to look into is car insurance. Many people sign up for the cheapest car insurance they can find and for simple commuter vehicle, that’s fine. But what if you use your vehicle for business purposes? Will you be covered?

There’s no way to answer that question until you speak with your own insurance provider and discuss your business needs with them. You might be just fine with the coverage you have. But you may not. Let’s look at an extreme case. If your small business was being a taxi operator, I can assure you that your average
car insurance online quote isn’t going to cover what you need.

Regular car insurance works on the base assumption that you spend a relatively small amount of time on the road and are exposed to a certain amount of risk. A taxi driver is exposed to significantly more risk than your average driver. Add to that the fact that passengers are paying for services and you end up in a whole other can of worms if they’re injured.

The safe way to go is to ask. Insurance is often overlooked when it comes to differentiating your regular home needs with your business needs. Ask the people who deal with this every day, they know the answer :)

As a small business owner, I’m just curios.. Is there any benefits to having different insurance plans even if driving isn’t related to the business?

  • Marc

If you’re not driving for the business, then you won’t need different car insurance. But if you’re operating out of your home, you should look into either additional or different home insurance to cover the business. If you search around for information on how to start a home business you’ll find tons of information as to why this may or may not apply to your situation.

I have a very mini business. Does these insurance plan make a difference?

They can. The only person who can say for sure is someone who’s experienced with business insurance policies (which I’m only somewhat familiar with) who sits down with you and discusses your business.

Some insurances can help protect you against some liabilities that can come at you from customers and/or clients. If you’re not worried about those kinds of things and you don’t expose your customers to any physical liabilities then you might be able to get away with no insurance at all. I’m not an insurance agent though so don’t take my word as an absolute :)
