After spending a full day with Google Analytics, I have to say I’m impressed. I put in the javascript at the very bottom of the pages so as to alleviate problems should there be any lag at the Google end of things. I know there was a flood when they first opened up analytics to the public so I do have some concerns in this area. I don’t think there will be another flood like that, but it can’t hurt to be prepared right?
The statistics that you get from Google Analytics are well worth any reservations you may have about adding javascript to your pages. I’m not that big a fan of javascript in general so I deffinitely had some reservations. Not neccessarily sane reservations, but hey, who’s keeping track right? You deffinitely should be aware that you will be sending a lot of information to Google. Not a big deal if that doesn’t bother you, but you need to be aware of it. One important additional consideration for me is that I’m Canadian. That means that my data is travels over the border if I have a locally hosted machine. In turn, that means my data being subject to things like the patriot act or any other madness they may come up with in the future.
This doesn’t really matter that much for the About A Webmaster because the site’s hosted out in the wild blue yonder. Looks like that website’s already subject to US law, but I have other sites, hosted in Canada. I’m not super paranoid about that at the moment, but it’s a pretty important thing to be aware of.
