Termites are probably the worse bug you can have in your home. Sure spiders and ants are gross, but they’re not going to destroy your home. I’ve watched enough shows on flipping houses to know that termites can absolutely devastate a house if the problem isn’t taken care of immediately. People can grab on to 4×4 posts and break them apart with their bare hands as if it was a loaf of bread. The worse part is that all of that damage happens inside of your walls so you can’t always tell what’s going on.
Have a look at these pictures of termites to see what they look like. If you’ve seen any of these little critters around your house, you need to call an exterminator right away. If you’re going to try to get rid of them yourself, that’s fine, but whatever you do, start right away. These things have a voracious appetite and the colony eats faster than you can imagine.
If you’re buying a home, make sure your inspector can tell you whether or not there are any signs of termites. If they can’t, hire a specialist. It may cost you a couple of hundred dollars, but a house infested with termites can easily run you $70 000 in repairs… If it’s fixable, and it hasn’t collapsed on top of you while you were sleeping.
