We’re now watching Just For Laughs 2006 on CBC and it’s certainly interesting. It’s great because we actually went to see one of the shows this year while on our honeymoon. We had a great time while we were there and watching it on TV is a fantastic reminder of the fun we had and I’m getting a chuckle out of the comedians that were on during the other galas.
One interesting thing is that there’s way more editing than I would have thought. Obviously they edit for time, but they actually edited boos and put in laughs. When Jason Alexander said “Fear not people of America…”, relising his mistake added,”and by which I mean Canada”, there was a combination of boos and oos coming from the audience. When I watched it on TV, there were applause and cheers coming from the crowd. I found that really surprising.
I guess it’s a little naive to think that a show like this wouldn’t be edited for content as well as time, but I suppose I personally find it deceitful to replace boos with cheers. I know that everything on TV goes through a lot of filters and manipulation, but I guess I never really thought about it that much until I was presented with a situation where I could clearly see what truly was and what was shown on TV.
