Idea For Hubs Just Came To Me!

September 29th, 2007 · No Comments

Sometimes when you just let an idea roll around in the back of your mind for long enough, the answer comes to you. Today, the answer for my robot hubs came to me.

The problem has been that I have been having a hard time properly lining up the differently sized holes that go through the length of the hub. One size needs to be 3mm and the other 4mm. I’ve managed to make one fairly straight one, but the second one didn’t go so well. While exploring ideas about a stepper motor, I came across these hubs. They reminded me of the much larger hubs I’ve seen at Princess Auto where there are interlocking hubs that require two metal ends and have a keyed rubber/nylon centre section to make sure all of the torque gets applied properly.

So what’s my plan exactly? I’m going to cut my hubs to half the length they previously were. Then cut out half the end on one side, then do the same on the other. The end result will be a very simple two piece, keyed hub that will have a little give if the shafts aren’t 100% dead centre. The great part is that a small mistake on one side will remain a small mistake. It won’t multiply as I would have normally continued on through the shaft.

I’ll toss up a picture later when I get it done up in Sketchup.
