Setting Real Goals

September 29th, 2007 · No Comments

In January, John Chow wrote about the fact that someday never comes. The whole point of the post was that if you don’t set very real and tangible goals, you’re dooming yourself to failure.

Around that same time, I started evaluating what I was going to set out to achieve with my blog in 2007. December and January’s a great time to reflect on the year past and develop new goals. I decided back then to strive to earn $5000 in gross revenues in 2007. Well I’m pleased to report that while I’m still short of this goal at the moment, I’m going to reach it in stride ahead of schedule.

I’ll give a tip of the hat to John for pointing out that a dream with no timeline will likely never happen. While I could certainly argue that I didn’t think of my goal all that much and that it may not have directly contributed to my increase in revenue, I don’t feel that way. I feel like the goal was always in the back of my mind, especially on days where I might not have felt as motivated to write. A lot of increases in revenue were “lucky”, but with the goal driven mindset to chase after those opportunities, a lot of that “luck” came from a lot of effort.

I’m not yet setting any new goals for 2008 at the moment. I’m going to let 2007 ride out since there are significant changes coming to my main income source in November. I’m going to shoot for doubling my 2007 income in 2008, with the +/- depending on the PPP Argus release. Hopefully if things go well, I can increase the target. I do have longer term goals in mind, but the volatility of the online world, a thesis to finish and prospective new jobs to chase after means that I’m keeping my long term goals loose and flexible. For the short term though, things will continue, just with loftier goals.
