Wordpress 2.3 is out for all to enjoy. It will be running on this blog in the next couple of days and I’m eager to see what it has to offer. One of the really interesting things about this release is that the features that are being promoted the most aren’t fancy bells and whistles. If anything, none of the pre-release promotion really talked about cool new interface features or anything of the sort. No, this release was all about the awesome new hooks.
Hooks are what the plugin developers use to interface with Wordpress’s core. This time around two of the most intriguing things from my perspective was the addition of bare-bone tags into the Wordpress core in conjunction with tag hooks and the addition of hooks for the Dashboard. The Dashboard has always been a bit of a waste of space for me. I’m very eager to see what plugin creators have in store for us on this front.
Then there’s the tagging. Tagging is now in Wordpress’s core and the hooks will be there for people to develop various interfaces for both entering/managing tags as well as presenting them. That means that we might see better overall usability with regards to tagging than what we have seen in the past from tag plugins.
Overall, it sounds great and I’m interested in putting it through its paces, though we may not see the full benefits of 2.3 for a while still as people continue to develop plugins for this release and its interesting new features.
