Semi-Productive Day Of Manufacturing

September 9th, 2007 · No Comments

Quite literally actually. I set out on a last-ditch effort to try and drill my own hubs before I sent a pair of round stock slugs to a machinist today. I came up with a different strategy to try and drill holes that were true. They didn’t need to be perfectly centered since I can compensate for that kind of wobble, but inserting both shafts had to create a straight line. My plan was to drill the small hole through with the vise bolted in place, then remove the bit, put in the slightly larger one and then drill through halfway. The last time there was flipping involved which was a recipe for failure.

The good news? The first one is very good. It will work as is and I’m quite happy with that. Then I tried the second one. That didn’t work. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but there’s a huge deflection in the shafts. So that one’s not going to work. I was trying to get through that one a little more quickly than the first one, so that likely has a lot to do with it.

One down, one to go… I am learning a lot along the way though. I’ve tapped a lot of holes and drilled twice as many. That being said, I think I’m good with experience for the moment… I’d rather just get on with it…
