Big Change Coming To PayPerPost

September 6th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Two major changes are coming to the way PayPerPost works. Their new system codenamed Argus is going to allow advertisers to see real traffic numbers generated by the PPP code that most PPP bloggers have already installed. It’s essentially going to work in a similar manner as Google Analytics from the blogger’s perspective. On the other side though, I suspect that it will be a far more stripped down version of stats reporting unless they have an agreement with another company who will provide those services. My main concern is the accuracy of the stats. Doing this kind of thing is not trivial and it’s not in PPP’s core business model so there’s a lot of room in there for a shoddy product.

The other major change is that they’re going to allow advertisers to select bloggers that they want to hire. That’s essentially the same system as ReviewMe, despite the talk of “revolutionary” changes. It is a big change for PPP though. The big question with this one though is whether or not it will create the same problem that ReviewMe has. Right now, I would guess that 1%-2% of ReviewMe blogs are pulling in 99% of the revenue. While that’s great for the big blogs, it could really stand to hurt the medium to small sized blogs.

I’m going to stave off predictions of doom and gloom this time because the last segmentation issue has turned out quite well for me despite my concerns of being cut out since I’m a Canadian blogger and not a US blogger. I am losing out on the number of ops I’m able to take, but the dollar amounts have risen now that advertisers can more specifically target the people they’re trying to reach. Argus stands to further that refinement which should open up the pocketbooks of the advertisers a bit more. We’ll just have to wait and see though. They’ve set a release date in early November, so it won’t be too long a wait.

The interesting thing to see is whether PPP would have a competitive edge over its competitors by furnishing advertisers with ‘real’ traffic numbers.

If it does, I bet other paid post companies will follow suit.

I think others may try, but some of PPP’s competitors lack resources to pull something like that off. Quite frankly I’m a little surprised that PPP has the resources. Gathering, storing and interpreting stats for 50000 sites isn’t trivial.
