I recently read an article that included some great tips on getting organized. That’s a constant struggle for me, I’m simply not terribly pre-disposed to being organized. One of the tips though really caught my eye. It was talking about taking time to dump to empty.
Dumping to empty was the simple act of having somewhere to store all of those things that people like myself often have floating around in their head as they try desperately not to forget them. More specifically for myself, that’s blogging ideas. Ideas for new posts come at any time during the day. When I get a good one I try to make a mental note not to forget it. That requires a lot of conscious brain power for the rest of the day.
For the last week I’ve been practicing this idea of dumping to empty where I take a few minutes every now and then and simply do a brain dump. If I have no ideas floating around, great. But when i do have ideas I get them down into a file and leave them there for later. Sometimes it’s just the title of a post, other times it’s a title along with a URL that I want to discuss. So far, it’s been working for me.
Not only do I now have a small list of post ideas, but I also spend less effort forcing myself to remember these ideas. If you don’t already do this (I know some of you do), give it a try for a while. Dumping everything from your mind periodically is a truly relaxing experience.
