Military Careers

It’s been very interesting to watch the changes in the general sentiment towards military service as a career. Back when I was younger and it was an option, working for the military in exchange for having your education paid for was an appealing idea for some. While the military didn’t seem to be very dangerous at the time, we did understand that basic training was no joke and that the entire process would be very demanding. But it was an option for those looking to avoid going into debt for their education.

That was before September 11th. Today things are different. Rather than considering the military from a logistics point of view, it has become a much deeper commitment. Enlisting in the military now means that you are committing yourself to going overseas. That’s meant increased pressure on recruiting for both the US Military as well as the Canadian Military. There’s been such additional pressure that both militaries have had to slightly relax the requirement to get in. Enlistment requirement armed forces.

As a citizen, I have nothing but the utmost respect for those who choose to fight so that we can go about our lives. As an employer, my experience with people who had a military background has been exceptional. These individuals come to the table with the kind of discipline and work ethic that you can only get in the military.

So there continue to be advantages to serving and dangers to it as well. The potential sacrifices are obvious. More than ever, it’s become a deeply personal choice. The numbers are on the news night after night. A warzone is a warzone for a reason.
