About a week ago I began work on adapting a Wordpress template to suit my own needs on this site. I’ll be releasing it as soon as I can. Hopefully today. So what possessed me to bother re-designing my blog? It’s simple, dollars.
I’m looking to work into a few affiliate programs and one of my ideas was go pull out fun t-shirts and present them to readers. The thinking is that people who enjoy my writings would likely enjoy other things that I like. I encountered a problem though. I had no real room to place the ad in a conspicuous area without getting rid of other elements I feel are important. The only answer was a redesign.
The very interesting part came a few days later as I found out that both John Chow and Darren Rowse had both redesigned their sites as well. Even more interesting are John Chow’s underlying motivations for his re-design. He was looking to reconfigure things to make more effective use of ad space.
So it seems that I’m not alone both in my plan of action and my underlying motivation. It’s kind of neat when your ideas start to align quite closely with those who have proven so successful.
