So just what is Thoof all about anyways? While it says that it’s a personalized news service, what does that really mean? I mean you can subscribe to a news feed from one of the major networks can’t you?
Well that’s true, you can, but Thoof brings a lot more to the table than a stream of news. Thoof brings you the news you care about. It uses an automated system to adjust your own feed based on a many factors. The first is the types of news that you want to see. But it doesn’t stop there. It uses community input to determine what are good and not so good features. Think of it like having a personal Digg that knows what you like. That way people can’t bury things you like or move up things you don’t. By taking all of the input into account, you get a better feed that’s tailored to your wants and needs.
If you think that’s handy, but aren’t quite convinced, wait there’s more… While you can give a thumbs up or thumbs down to articles, the Thoof founders also understood that sometimes the news can be misleading. For this, you can actually alter the title, summary, or tags on the story. The story itself, hosted on its home server remains unchanged, but how it’s presented to the community can be altered. Think of Wikipedia editing for something to compare to.
So Thoof provides group voting with personalization and community editing, all in one package. In essence, you and your community members become the media. You get to read the stories you’re interested in and have them presented to you in a manner that everyone feels is fair.
Sick of spin? Give Thoof a try.

Nice write up. I’m going to have to give Thoof a try. I spend too much time surfing the news sites and it sounds like this can really save me some wasted time.

Thanks, it is nice to see continued progress in news feeds. We still don’t have it quit right yet. It does look like Thoof is a big step forward though.
