Regular Traffic Is Up, Alexa Ranking Is Worse

August 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

It’s a little disappointing. While Alexa rank is definitely not any measure that I hold myself to in terms of personal accomplishment, it is a measure that advertisers care a lot about. That means that if I’m interested in revenue from those advertisers, I have to be interested in Alexa rankings as well.

There are two possibilities for what seems to be a broad shift from my standpoint. The first if that the Firefox Alexa toolbar that I spoke about recently is gaining momentum and applying traction to the overall rankings, redistributing some of traffic values in places that were previously under-represented. Since my blog has a slightly larger than average IE user base, my site would expectedly be one of those affected by this kind of shift.

There’s also a broader possibility. That is that web traffic continues to grow and its growth is outpacing my blog’s traffic growth. Since the gap between the two would increase, it would naturally push my site down since it means that others are performing better or new sites that have recently come online have moved ahead of me.

I’ve always been patient with these types of things because I know that they are somewhat out of my control. I also know that the solution is simple. If I attract more traffic, then my rank will increase. It’s just that easy. I may need to attract a lot more traffic to have my rank increase a little, but the strategy is the same no matter what.

so I will arm myself with a straightforward strategy that fits in with my long term goals and defend myself with patience.
