Food At The Chickenburger

August 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

We’ll start with the obvious. The Chickenburger sells chicken burgers. You’re shocked, I can tell. But they don’t sell the chicken burger that you and I grew up with (assuming you’re my age). They sell a chicken burger that’s made up of small bits of chicken on a bun rather than a patty. I haven’t had one yet, but two people who I know have tried it and have said that it appears to be an acquired taste.

My usual meal consists of a plain double cheeseburger and a large order of fries. Portions are different here. The large fries are pretty standard fries, and are about the size of a regular order at most fast food chains. The double cheeseburger would be, to my best guess roughly equivalent in size to a quarter pounder. The main difference here though is that it’s made from real ground beef. There are no frozen patties here. They have real ground beef rolled up into the correct sized balls they take them out to cook them on the grill pretty much on demand. The patties are very fresh and full of delicious meaty flavour. Warning : if you’re one of those mostly vegetarian people who has a bit of meat every now and then, stay away from this thing. There aren’t any fancy spices or sauces so it’s a very meaty flavour. Fantastic if you’re on the carnivorous side of things, but not so good if you don’t appreciate the taste of unseasoned meat.

To drink, there’s pop of course, but you’d be missing out if you didn’t have a milkshake. They’ve been voted the city’s best milkshake a few times in the yearly best of polls in The Coast. I had their chocolate one the other day and I have to say, I didn’t really like it. The chocolate flavouring left a wicked aftertaste that I didn’t care for very much. But the strawberry… It’s to die for. It’s by far the best milkshake I’ve ever had in my life. As with the other period elements of the classic restaurant, the milkshake is brewed in a very old school way, leaving it very milky. Some people don’t like the “new” milkshakes that are very think, nearly to the point of having a consistency like ice cream. I like those, but I can completely understand why people prefer the thinner, milky ones.

Past that, I have no experience with their menu. The one thing to keep in mind is that they tend to lean towards old school methods of cooking things, so if you’re looking for a modern dish, move along. But if you see something something on the menu and like it the way that old diner in your town used to make it, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll like the Chikenburger version too.
