If Your Comments Are Spam, Guess Where They Go

August 13th, 2007 · No Comments · Web Development

Straight to Akismet’s spam list. Since I’ve made my way onto the D-list there has been a mild increase in comment spam. That is, depending how you classify spam. For me, if the sole purpose to your comment is to get a backlink, you qualify as spam. That doesn’t mean that you’ll get tossed in the spam bin if that’s the reason you’re posting. You see I can’t determine what a person’s motives are when they post a comment. Therefore, by my previously mentioned definition, there are probably quite a few spam messages on my blog that I never deleted because I liked the content, regardless of what the underlying motivation was.

So if you’re trying to get a backlink, make your comment worthwhile. Read the post, think about it, comment intelligently on it. I can’t encourage this enough. If you write a comment that says, “nice post” and the name is “best poker site”, I’m sending that straight to spam. Others are doing it too. I’m seeing a bunch of messages from time to time end up in the spam bin that would normally have at least been put in moderation if not posted to the site right away. The reason is that those messages were deemed spam by others, Akismet then added your footprint to their database and made it a lot harder for you to post successfully afterwards. That’s not fun for anyone.

So keep it nice and tidy. Unlike some of those people who think anything that anyone posts on their site is fine, I’m a little dictatorial with mine. If it’s a thought out response, it will stay online. If it’s fluff that only there to serve yourself, then off it goes.
