A few years ago my father in law bought himself a used Mercedes. It was the kind of car he had wanted his whole life. He bought himself a late 90’s C240. Now normally when we go visit, we have to fly there and they happily loan us their car and they use their truck. I remember the first trip thinking that there was no way he was going to let me drive that thing since it was his dream car of course. That was perfectly fine by me, the truck would have done fine.
Much to my surprise though, not only could we use the car, he insisted on it. You see rather than being concerned that someone might do something to his new pride and joy, he was much more interested in having people enjoy it much the same as he did. So off we went in the new Mercedes.
The thing was a real pleasure to drive. The ride quality was awesome on the many bumpy roads in the small community where they lived. The horsepower coming from the smallish V6 was really impressive. When you hit the right set of RPMs, it took off like a rocket. I hadn’t driven a rear wheel drive car in a long time either so I was really impressed with the sharp turning radius. The interior was very comfortable, all the controls seemed to be where they needed to be when you needed them.
As for the exterior styling, while some may call it bland, it does carry its own quiet dignity. That, in sharp contrast to today’s tuners. This car seems to be confident it what it is and therefore doesn’t need any flashy body lines or style elements. That tends to stand true to Mercedes’s brand and philosophy. These cars are actually relatively common and can be bought for a very reasonable price if you’re willing to go a few years old. If you’re looking into a moderately priced entry into the luxury market a 6-7 year old C240 could be just the right car to help you do that.
