Contact Lenses

Contact Lenses have become a bit of a drain on our financial resources at home over the last few years. We found out that the regular contacts that my wife had been wearing were damaging her eyes because they didn’t breath enough. So she had to change to monthly lenses which have had a positive result. The problem though is that we’re now buying disposable contacts. It’s certainly not a back breaking cost, but it is an annoyance and sometimes I do wonder if we couldn’t find a less expensive way to get new lenses.

AClens.com is a place that I might be checking out for contact lenses online. Generally when I’ve bought things in the past, online prices tend to beat the bricks and mortar prices hands down. Especially when it comes to specialty items like contact lenses. I’m not 100% sure, but it looks like the lenses we have to buy would be $5 cheaper per pack.

Are there downsides? For sure. Shipping is always a downside. To compensate for that, AClens offers free shipping on orders over $89 which isn’t that much if you’re stocking up. Unfortunately, as with most free shipping offers, it doesn’t include Canada. Canadian shipping isn’t that bad though. Their international shipping page says that it’s $9.95 for any order shipped to Canada. That may be a little expensive if you’re just buying a pack or two, but if you’re picking up 6 or so, the cost becomes negligible when compared to the savings.

The other hassle actually has nothing to do with online stores at all. You optometrist makes part of their money by selling you glasses and contacts. If you buy your contacts elsewhere, they earn less. That means that your optometrist may or may not appreciate the idea of giving you eye exams and then watching you run off buy your lenses online. In this case, check around for a more flexible optometrist. You’re still going to need regular eye exams, so they still will earn money from you, just not quite as much as they traditionally might have.

You also have to get the strength/size right. AClense makes up for this by offering a 30 day return, but it’s just such a hassle to need to return things in this way. It’s a lot easier to just get it right the first time.

At the end of the day, it’s all about how much money you can save. Nickels and dimes might not be worth it, but if you can save $5 per pack, that adds up if you’re buying monthlies. Stock up and keep your money in your wallet :)
