I watched Bon Cop Bad Cop today which is a Canadian movie that came out in 2006. It looked sort of interesting when I first saw commercials for it, but being a Canadian movie I just didn’t know if I should bother paying to see it. A lifetime of Canadian made movies have made me rather cynical towards this genre of movie.
That being said, I’ve seen a few decent Canadian made movies lately and now I can say that Bon Cop Bad Cop is definitely at the peak of the mountain with regards to Canadian popular movies. It may not share the artistry of some of our finer film makers, but in terms of something you want to sit down with a bowl of popcorn with, it’s a two thumbs up kind of movie.
Here’s the kicker though. If you can’t handle subtitles and don’t understand French, then you’ll hate it. If you don’t know about major events in Hockey, you’ll miss out on half of the subtle jokes. The comedy was well placed and really made me laugh. There were a lot of great English/French jokes and some good general humour too.
The plot was pretty good, nothing terribly innovative, but enough variation on the traditional cop movie to keep it interesting.
Criticisms? While the movie is amazing for Hockey loving bilingual Canadians, I’m not sure it gets decent reviews from people outside that demographic. For example, one comment on Rotten Tomatoes was:
I couldn’t get past the first 10 mins of the movie because of french and subtitles.
I can understand how someone would get frustrated with the movie if that’s how they felt about both French and subtitles.
Another big flaw is that everything refers to the NFL, but it doesn’t look like they could afford the licensing costs so everything is a cheap and cheesy knock off.
Despite its flaws, I had lots of fun watching it. There are a couple of impressively gross parts which made it even better for me, but not so much for my wife, so take that into consideration
Check it out, it’s lots of fun to watch.

Interesting; will check it out, definitely. I don’t mind French subtitles. In fact, I don’t mind subtitles at all.

The subtitles I was referring to are in English, the movie’s 1/2 French and 1/2 English. I’m sure there’s a French subtitled one too for the French audiences though
