Google Breaks Through 50% Market Share

June 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

The latest Neilsen ratings show Google further separating itself from competitors legging out a 56% market share. That’s a whole lot of market share in a space that’s this broad and competitive. Yahoo’s still in the game at 21.5% and the recent firing of their CEO may be the shot in the arm they needed to come up with a strategy to truly compete.

The surprise for me in these numbers lay with MSN. Near zero growth while their major competitors are eating them up. Vista was supposed to tie in MSN search and help boost their numbers even if people preferred another engine. That doesn’t seem to have materialized. If I’m not mistaken, the rumours were that IE7 would have the same impact, but it remains only partially adopted with a 50/50 IE6/IE7 distribution within my stats.

With continued grey market SEO going on, the gap between Google and its competitors is likely to widen. That is unless Yahoo pulls a rabbit out of its hat. We’ve certainly not seen the last of the search engine wars, but this increased separation is going to have some significant impacts.
