Burn Notice

USA Network’s Burn Notice is a new show that’s going to air starting June 28th. They want to drum up some buzz about the show, and I’m here to help. The entire premise revolves around a CIA Operative named Michael Westen. One day, Micheal gets a “Burn Notice”, which in the spying world means that you’ve been declared untrustworthy. That means you’re fired and you’re not going to get any work from any other friendly agencies.

The series will be all about his pursuit of the “who” and “why” of his burn notice. But what if it wasn’t a TV series? What if it was a story that I was writing? How would I have had him fired and why would it have happened?

When you get fired from a spy agency, it’s a shocking event. Not only is it a surprise to find out that what you’ve been doing all your life has now come to an abrupt and unexpected end, but you have far more shocking details to worry about.

Last night Michael was in Luxembourg, laying down to rest in an average hotel on an average street and now, he’s on a beach dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts. He looks around and his head starts spinning. He tries and roll over and as he does, he hears the crackling of empty beer cans as his sides mash them into the sand. Struggling to his feet he hears yelling and cheering. As his eyes start to focus, he recognize a familiar scene, but it makes no sense for this to be in Luxembourg. He’s at spring break?

As Michael gathers his bearings he quickly comes to the realization that he’s in Daytona beach. The only thing is that the last thing he remembers was being in Luxembourg at the end of January. The jolt of awaking thousands of miles away from where he should be, several weeks into the future from when he should be would be enough to send a normal individual into a panic. Not a CIA spy though.

Michael dashes off to the nearest pay phone and dials his emergency contact number.

“The number you have dialed is not in service.”

The backup contact…

Michael knows what’s happening. He’s been burned. He’s on his own now, no wallet, the clothes on his back and no one to turn to since nobody knows he’s a spy except those who have fired him.

Far away in an average suburban house a woman sits on her couch as she speaks on the phone.

“Thank you so much for your help. It was just so dangerous for him and I couldn’t bear to lose him.”

“It’s ok, I’m more than happy to help you. Michael’s served us well, but we can’t keep him from his family forever.”

“I know he’ll think his life is ruined, but now he can live a normal life. He can have a normal job and be close to home.”

“Everything will work out fine. Don’t worry. If you have any problems, you know how to reach us Ms. Westen.”

“Yes, I do.”

With that, the places the phone down and with the knowledge that she’s saved her son from further danger, Ms. Westen smiles to herself and realizes just how lucky she was to find out about Michael’s life of spying and found just the right person to get him out. So very lucky.

If you want the real dirt on the story though, go to Burn Notice’s site and read up on it.
