IDrive-E

If you’ve ever found yourself in a situation where you wanted to retrieve an old version of a file but couldn’t because you had saved over top you should read this. As technology has been moving forward, we’ve found that there are two ways to go about things. Do it yourself, or outsource. In many instances, there isn’t any need or desire for certain services in-house. This is further compounded in the small business market where in-house development is simply not an option. So what are they to do for backups?

Performing your own backups is possible and the short term costs are manageable. Unfortunately though there are a lot of long term hidden costs. You’re going to have to physically manipulate the DVDs you burn, you’re going to have to bring them off site yourself, preferably to a bank safety deposit box, you’re going to have to remember to do it and finally when you do need something from backup, it’s going to take you a while to figure out where it is.

IDrive-E is a company to which you can outsource this irritating but fundamental need. They provide an online backup service that protects your data. Not only do they protect it by backing it up, but they also protect it in transit and finally when it arrives on their servers. They use 128 bit SSL to get the data from you’re computer to their backup server. 128 bit SSL is the standard method that people on the internet use to transport sensitive information such as credit card information, usernames and passwords. The data you send to them will be encrypted using 256 bit AES which is the standard by which medical records and financial records are currently stored.

Aside from the precautions they take to safeguard your data, they also provide a helpful service to you. You get a client that lets you choose what you want backed up and then it backs them up on a schedule you determine. Set it once and then forget about it. No media to mess around with. You can also get access to up to 30 versions of a particular file. The best part of all though is knowing that your data will be safe should something happen to your office. A couple of years ago I read about an accountant who had his office burn down. In 24 hours he was set up again working out of his house temporarily. You can’t do that without solid backups that you can rely on when things go bad.
