If Your Blog Isn’t Popular, You Have To Sell Yourself

May 28th, 2007 · No Comments

There are lots of things that people say you have to do to have a successful blog. You need to write well, write frequently, participate in communities, etc… But if you’re trying to make your blog a financial success as well as draw lots of traffic you’re going to have to go a bit further. You’re gong to have to sell yourself.

Take the PPP Direct badge over on the right hand side of this post. If my blog were already successful, like John Chow’s for example. Simply putting the badge up would be enough to force me to beat away the advertisers with a pointy stick. But I don’t have a blog like John Chow’s. First of all, I eat far less live lobster than he does (PETA people don’t follow this link). Second of all I don’t carry anywhere near the traction with advertisers due to my significantly smaller traffic levels. So what should I do? Give up right? Not so fast…

Since my blog is less attractive to advertisers than John’s I need to make it more attractive. Obviously that’s going to start with the basics. It’s a lot easier to sell ad space on blogs that carry well written, interesting content than those that are full of mindless rants, littered with typos. Then you need to look to your strengths. One of my strengths is that I’ve gotten great feedback on PayPerPost from advertisers. So I captured a screenshot of my PPP rating and posted it immediately beneath the PPP Direct badge. That tells advertisers that 28 (at time of writing) other advertisers liked my material so much that I’ve averaged 5/5 tacks. While it may seem like jargon to those not familiar with PPP lingo, it’s a starting point at least. For the near future, the only people I expect to be using the PPP Direct system are current advertisers familiar with PPP and its lingo.

That’s the first step I’ve taken in helping to sell myself to those who are buying. It’s by no means the last, but I hope that it’s enough to get you thinking about your strong points and what you can do to help you sell yourself.
