Sometimes we get so wrapped up in what it is we’re doing that we completely forget that there are other options. A lot of us have spent a long time fine tuning our SEO skills. We’ve read everything there is to read on the subject, tested several theories and feel pretty confident in our skills. With our newfound talents, we set out to promote and grow our latest greatest website idea.
While that’s certainly a solid, tried, tested and true strategy, it’s not the only one. You need only look to FaceBook as one obvious example where SEO hasn’t really factored into their marketing plan. When was the last time you searched for anything at all and got a FaceBook page as a response? For me, that would be never.
Big deal right? There are lots of websites that have significant volumes of content hidden behind a login system. But often times they are using a subscription model as a revenue generator. FaceBook is using an ad revenue model very similar to what people applying SEO principles are following.
That means they’re generating tons of revenue using the same model but with an entirely different strategy. This is what your business type people would call thinking outside the box.
The point of all of this is that there are alternatives to SEO. SEO makes a lot of sense and can have great ROI, but it’s not the only route. It’s basic diversification that we’re always told about whether we’re investing in the market, monetizing a blog, or anything else that exposes you to risk. As the SEO competition increases over time, alternative sources of traffic generation are going to become more and more valuable. Stake your claim now.
