Smile Banking

Smile credit cards are credit cards in the UK that have had a pretty hot winning streak in the Guardian Consumer Finance Awards. They’ve taken the title for best credit card four consecutive years in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. You can read more about their ‘04 win at the Guardian.

Smile is one of the newer Internet based banks. These banks have been making their mark the world over as they generally offer better service and better interest than traditional banks. While it’s true that the online banks won’t provide you with as great a breadth of services as a traditional branch based bank, they make up for it by working exceptionally hard in their areas of expertise. Such is the case with Smile. Now while others have voted Smile the best credit card, credit cards are like cars. There’s no best car for everyone. Each one fills its own niche in the market so you really need to figure out what you need from a credit card before you go get one. That being said, starting your search with a proven winner means that you’ll probably like what they have to offer.

They’ve got two major credit card offerings. A classic card and a gold card. The gold card has income requirements, so you’d have to meet those in order to qualify for it. While both cards seem to have pretty standard interest rates, you can drop them simply by getting a Smile account. They also allow 46 days interest free which is fantastic and far better than the 20 something days you can bump into if you’re not careful. They also offer cash back on everything you put on the card. All of that with no annual fee does indeed make it an award winning card.

Should you get a smile card? I can’t answer that for you. What I can say is that it’s one of the better cards that I’ve seen out there so far. In my perspective it’s well worth checking out if you’re looking for a well rounded, general purpose credit card.
