So here’s a very interesting idea. WebsiteToDos.com provides their web development information in the form of a website to dos list. I think it’s a very novel idea since it really presents the material in a nice punchy manner.
showing the website as a to do list means that you can print it out and keep it handy as you work on developing your website idea. Then anytime you’re not sure what a particular item means, you can go back to the website and find out by clicking on it.
The weaker points are that there are a couple of items, such as “Avoid identical meta-tags” and “Remove links to bad neighbourhoods” that could be rephrased. While meta-tags are making a bit of a comeback, it might be better to rephrase it as “Generate unique meta-tags”. As for the bad neighbourhoods, I would suggest something along the lines of “Avoid linking to bad neighbourhoods”. I know these are nit-picky things, but they do bother me a little
I think there’s room for expansion here. The basic idea is great, but it could be improved by making the checkboxes functional and using a cookie to store information so people could keep track of their progress online. That would be a nice halfway to a full login system. Easier to develop and less obtrusive for the user.
There’s some obvious expansion room within the content itself. A few items that might be worth investigating are information architecture, writing, editing and titles to name a few.
Overall the website shows how a great idea doesn’t need to be complicated. Sometimes simplicity is the best strategy.
