Many people have been asking me why on earth I would want to be voted in as the Worst Blogger of All Time. Well I’ll take the time to explain it now since it seems that I don’t yet have the clout to solicit enough votes to win this thing.
As I looked through the various categories at the Blogger’s Choice Awards, there were two categories that I felt that my blog could theoretically qualify for. Those would be the Best Blog About Blogging and Best Blog of All Time categories. I quickly came to the realization that there was no way I had enough influence to push me into the lead for those categories. There are far too many good blogs with massive audiences. Undoubtedly, at least one of them would show up on the list. So I looked past the obvious.
That’s when I found the Worst Blog of All Time category. As I thought about it, I considered the promotional appeal of placing ads that read “Voted Worst Blog Of All Time”. Who could resist checking that out. William Hung and Sanjaya of American Idol notoriety have demonstrated what being bad at something can do in terms of popular culture.
Given that the entire thing is sponsored by PayPerPost, I also assumed that some of the nominees would be blogs that the PayPerPost CEO has childish spats with. The thing is that those blogs are generally very well regarded blogs and would be unlikely to garner very many votes amongst the general public.
So that’s the reasoning behind the madness. Unfortunately things have gone awry. I’ll go through the lessons learned and mistaken assumptions in a post to come.

The problem is that things that are notorious for being bad don’t really have staying power… although I guess a temporary bump in popularity is better than no bump at all.
I just noticed you’re tagging now, you might want to consider replacing your category list in the sidebar with a tag cloud, rather than just linking to it. I suspect that may have had something to do with my mysterious pagerank… aside from being more flexible than categories, it gives you a bonus of having your pages more.. uh.. keyword-rich.

Yeah, the plan was to get the temporary bump and hopefully capture a few stragglers. The title would have held though and I could have used it in promotional material indefinitely. Not that it matters now though
I had planned to put the cloud into the sidebar, but it seemed so big… I’ll bounce it around in my brain some more though. Thanks for the reminder.

I’m experimenting with layouts right now, if you monkey with the CSS a bit (and cut down on the number of tags in the cloud) it fits/looks a lot better.

Thanks for the tip. Do you keep it in tag form or do you put them in list form so that there’s only one per line?
