What To Do When Your Traffic Disappears

April 8th, 2007 · No Comments

Eventually a time will come when your traffic curve turns down instead of up. While your traffic trend is on its way up everything is fun. You get to watch your website grow, speculate as to how great things are going to get and enjoy the optimism.

When your traffic starts to drop though, some of the fun can dissipate. But it’s no time to panic. The first step it to try to identify where you lost your traffic. My recent dip has been caused by the loss of a popular set of keyphrases that I probably shouldn’t have been ranking that well for anyways. If that’s the case, buck up and move on. Keep writing, chasing down the keyphrases you should be ranking for and fishing for some long tail.

If your Google traffic’s steady, check out your referrals. If you’ve lost a good backlink, you have to check that out. Perhaps you didn’t redirect a page properly when you moved it and lost your link that way. If that’s the case a quick 301 or 302 redirect will fix it all up. Otherwise, you may want to get in touch with the webmaster who dropped your link and see what’s up. Be sure to do it in a friendly manner though :)

The other potential leak would be direct type-in and bookmarks. There isn’t a whole lot you can about this one. You should do a mental check and think about any changes you’ve made recently that might have affected that. Did you used to have your URL in your banner? Did you have any other type of branding out there that came to an end when your traffic dipped?

The moral of the story is keep working at it. So long as you continue with your long term development plans, short term set backs will remain short term. Don’t get too caught up in the momentary lull.
