Mortgage Low Down is a blog dedicated to mortgage news. This is the blog where the previously mentioned article on 43 Tips For Home Buyers can be found. They’ve been writing since June 2006 which is a good stretch for a blog. The fact that they’ve been around 9 months already is a great sign for the longevity of their blog. If a blog is going to be a flash in the pan, they’ll disappear within the first three months. If you can outlast that it show long term dedication to what you’re doing.
The first thing I noticed is that they host a carnival. Carnivals are an interesting beast in the blogging world. They’re touted as a wonderful thing, but unless you have someone good hosting it, many of them die off after only one publication. Mortgage Low Down has posted their first one, the gauntlet has been thrown down. Let’s see if they manage to make it to a second one.
The writing on the blog is respectable, though I find a lot of the discussion superficial at times. I don’t think that’s a major problem, I know some of my discussion is superficial at times as well. but it is one of those things that separates the good from the great. The staff writers generally tend to be less insightful than those posts written with no author (I assume by the site creator). The staff writer posts feel more like an associated press blurb rather than someone really trying to convey ideas to an audience.
Overall I find the blog reads more like a newspaper than a blog. I’d like to see more opinion thrown in there. That’s one of the major items that separate blogs from traditional media. If we want the facts, we’ll pick up a newspaper. When we’re reading blogs, we want to know what you think about those facts.
Another interesting point is that despite being in a competitive sector with many viable revenue streams, Mortgage Low Down does obvious monetization on their website. Many blogs avoid this until they feel they are well established, but the jury is still out on whether it really matters or not. In either case, it does help clear up the layout when you can avoid ads. Quite frankly it’s the cleanest layout on any blog I’ve visited in a while
