Borderware is a company that seeks to provide Email compliance systems as well as a host of other privacy and security systems. Their offerings include lots of security systems like a hardware firewall and a hardware mail firewall. There’s lots out there on the benefits of firewalls in general but the email firewall is a bit of a new term.
There are lots of hardware spam filters out there that do a great job. There’s one deployed where I work and I have to say that it does a really impressive job. We get far less spam today than we ever have. But Borderware’s email firewall takes it a step beyond. Aside from being a spam filter, it also allows the organization to control outbound content. For some companies, that’s a heck of a feature. While they’ve got some literature on email privacy, I always cringe when I hear those two words put together. Email is inherently insecure and is really a poor vehicle for transmitting “private” data. A hardware appliance like this may reduce some of the risks, but it can never eliminate them all. Don’t post sensitive data on the open web and don’t send it through email. That’s the only way to ensure that your email and web privacy isn’t breached.
The great thing about these security products though is that you offload the work to someone else. Comprehensive digital security is difficult to attain in-house. By offloading some of those responsibilities onto a company who’s existence depends on the security of their clients, you can remove chunks from the equation for your technical team. It’s all a balancing act of course since you need to factor in cost, support and allocate resources to manage these systems. You also have to consider the fact that you’re going to rely on a black box to secure services on your network. That requires a lot of corporate trust.
In my experience these black box solutions can be very effective, but you need to find out if the scale and cost match your needs.
