StartupCrunch.com is tacking a whole approach to launching startups. Traditionally you’ve got to pound a lot of pavement and/or spend a fair amount of money on advertising to get the word out. StartupCrunch’s main selling feature is their CrunchRank. According to their description, they give you a rank from 1-100 based on the merits of your pitch. That rank decreases as you get “editorial coverage”. The result is that the newer projects get a better shot at more exposure as older startups, who have had their time in the limelight, have their CrunchRank drop.
From a startup’s perspective, all you have to do is put together a video pitch that’s no more than six minutes long. Do that, fork out 100 Euros and you’ll be hooked up.
While that sounds great, there are a lot of concerns to evaluate. The “editorial coverage” seems to be code for the order you’re posted on the StartupCrunch website. If that’s not accurate, then they would do well to provide a bit more information on this aspect. I also find the website to be pretty heavily laden with advertising. While that’s fine if you’re in a situation like I am, trying to generate revenue from a regular blog. The advertisements they are running are effectively competing with the space that they’re charging people 100 Euros for. While they can certainly do as they please on their own website, it’s something that I would be looking at if I was wanting to use their service.
At the end of the day, StartupCrunch is offering very fancy sponsored posts/paid directory listings on their website. That’s what it all boils down to from my perspective. They have a very creative system implemented to help give everybody front page time so they’re not just copying other systems. While you can replicate the results of what they do through other means, they do provide a unique service. The burning question for you will be to find out whether or not it’s worth 100 Euros. My suggestion would be to contact them and find out just what it is they mean by “editorial coverage”. They may have more to suggest than what they publicly present on their website.

It’s an interesting concept. I suppose only time will tell whether it works out for them or not.
