Just Because I Like A Country Song Doesn’t Mean I Like All Country

March 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

This is the problem I have with lots of the music systems that try and figure out what it is that you like. I like good music. When it comes to some genres of music I’ve got a higher tolerance for bad music (e.g. hard rock and 70’s southern rock), but most of the time, you take the best of the best within a genre and there’s pretty good odds that I’ll like it. Unfortunately the music systems don’t understand this.

I like Jay-Z and K-OS. That doesn’t mean that I want to hear stuff like “Smack That” by Akon or “Dem Jeans” by Chingy. K-OS and Jay-Z have something to say and it shows in their music. Akon and Chingy, not so much from what I’ve heard. The Dixie Chicks have written what I feel is one of the most well written, emotionally and politically charged songs to have true commercial success in a long time with “Not Ready To Make Nice”. I’m a fan of it. That doesn’t mean I’m a fan of stuff like “Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy” and the like. I really like System of A Down, that doesn’t mean that I like the latest screaming into a microphone band to flash into the pan. You see where I’m going with this?

So are these just the random rantings of nut? Well maybe, but what I hope they are as well is a hint into the needs of at least one fan who uses these music services and would just like to hear some stuff he likes. You know, the good stuff. I don’t mind being exposed to new or Indie artists, but I like it the same way I like minor hockey. Fun to watch, but I prefer to watch a good NHL game.
