Post Ratings - New Plugin

February 26th, 2007 · 2 Comments

I’ve just recently installed the Post Ratings plugin by Lester Chan. I got a head’s up about the Post Rating plugin over at John Chow’s website. John tries out lots of plugins so I get to let him do all the work and then I pick out the ones that look like they’ll work for me over here.

I like this one, but I’ll have to see how it pans out. I’d love for regular readers to use it and rate posts as you feel. It’s a feature filled plugin with lots of configuration options. So many that it creates its own tab in the main admin menu with a few sub-tabs. I was a little worried about someone plowing through and spamming with low ratings all over but since it keeps the IP of people who rate things, I can very easily get rid of that should I need to. That way I can drop all ratings from a spammer with one SQL query.

While rating a post is useful, what I really wanted from this plugin was the ability to show the top rated posts. I thought I’d just write a quick function to pull that out, but to my pleasant surprise that feature’s already built in. While that makes sense since it’s not much effort, you never know with plugins. Some of them have everything you could dream of while others are in their early stages and still lacking some useful features. This one’s loaded with features.

I also check out John’s site to see what are good plugins to use and this one seems to be a winner. I have just downloaded the plugin and hopefully will be installing it later this afternoon.

Yeah, I like it a lot. John’s great for giving them a real world trial too. It’s really nice to be able to see it at work somewhere else first.
