A while ago I wrote a sponsored post on Mustang MySpace layouts. While I do often get some search engine traffic on my sponsored posts, it’s rarely anything to bother noticing. After all, the point of the sponsored posts isn’t for me to get traffic, but rather for the advertisers to get traffic. The Mustang layouts page has been an exception though.
While I’ve known all along that MySpace layouts pages get lots of traffic I don’t think I fully understood the magnitude of it all. I’m not ranking well for Mustang MySpace layouts, nor should I be, but I’m getting a very noticeable chunk of traffic coming from this segment.
So should you run out and make a MySpace layouts website right away? Well that’s up to you but my suspicion would be that while you’ll get a ton of traffic very little of it would convert. That’s bad for advertising. If you just want traffic, it’s a great pool to draw from, but if you want to monetize that traffic you may find it hard. I would compare it to desktop background webpages. It’s not hard to get the traffic, but it’s rare to get anyone clicking on an ad.
At the end of the day, people looking for free stuff are much less likely to want to buy something. If you’ve got content that speaks to shoppers, they’ll be far more in tune with advertising and referrals and you’ll make a lot more of a lot less traffic.
