Energy Savings From A Black Background

February 23rd, 2007 · 2 Comments

I had meant to write about this when I found it last week. Better late then never :)

EcoIron has written about how changing Google’s background from white to black would save a smidgen above 2 megawatt hours per day globally. That’s a massive amount of energy when you consider the infinitesimally small amount of effort that would be required to accomplish this.

One interesting aspect of discussion with regards to this article is that the global supply of CRTs is going to continue to decrease. That means that the amount of energy saved will continue to decline as time wears on. With such a limited foreseeable lifespan, I can’t really see Google sacrificing their branding efforts in exchange for energy savings. Quite frankly they’ll probably save far more energy by considering energy savings on their clustered machines. If you consider the number of machines they are dealing with on a 24/7 basis, I’m sure even a smal amount of energy saved would have a far greater impact.

I just wanted to bring up the discussion because I’ve been on a slightly greener kick as of late. I’m still light years away from being environmentally sound, but I am trying to do the small things. It’s very interesting to see where these small things can have a really big impact.

I liked the article that you quoted and thought it worth acting upon, no matter how small the savings, so I created http://www.blackle.com
I hope you find it useful.
