John Chow’s undertaken a very interesting new experiment in alternative community building. His previous efforts to build a user community have included a free backlink within a post for a review of his blog and the inclusion of the top commentators plugin on his blog.
The latest effort to help foster a solid community is to link back to posts that John likes from the pool of his active users. While this is certainly a time consuming ordeal it’s a pretty spam-proof method of sharing some link love with the community. I’m very curious to see how often John will be writing posts like this and how he’ll otherwise keep up with it.
The above are great examples of alternative community building techniques, but I’ll pitch a challenge to John. All of the above examples foster community on a one on one basis, from the community to John and back.
In order to foster a true community though, there should need to be some relation between the members as well. My idea would be to hold a review another contributor’s blog contest. The reward would be that John then links to the reviews. That’s just an idea off the top of my head. John’s proven himself to be quite creative in this arena so I’d love to see him take on this challenge and find a new way for a blog to build a true community of users.
