For those of you who know me, you may be a little surprised to see me start a blog. To skew a Simpsons quote, “Why now? Why not three years ago?”
My reluctance to enter into the blogging arena comes not from a lack of bull-headed opinions, not from a lack of obnoxious things to say, not from a lack of wanting to vent in a public arena, not even from a lack of ability to embarrass myself before others. No I have ample amounts of each of these qualities. Beyond these requisites, I even enjoy writing and like practicing the craft when it can be done in a fun and interesting manner.
So what’s been holding me back you might ask? Well professional reasons primarily. Though the first thought that comes to mind when you read that might be that I was worried about having a bad day at work and venting on my blog, that wasn’t the case. My concern was a little more subtle.
A blog invites a person to put themselves out there in a pretty uncensored manner. It doesn’t take a long time before you find blogs out there full of vulgarities, inappropriate comments, or worse yet, atrocious spelling. These kinds of things, particularly that last one, can come back to haunt you when a potential employer Googles you and happens to come across your blog.
My concerns have eased over time as I’ve continued to work on my other website About A Webmaster, a website with articles covering the various aspects of being a webmaster. I’ve been writing for that website for over a year now and have enough confidence that I can write reasonably well and can look at things that I’ve written in the past with pride.
