Attempt #1 At New Theme Failed

February 15th, 2007 · 5 Comments

I’ve been wanting to change the look and feel of this blog for a while now. I’ve been watching my dashboard checking the new themes that come out all the time but was having a hard time finding one. I finally found one that I thought I liked, Akon. it had some rendering problems on IE7 which have apparently been fixed since the last time I downloaded it, but beyond that I just don’t know that it quite fit the character of this blog.

I was going to swap out the banner images to make them more seagull friendly of course, but beyond that I just found it to be a bit too blocky for my tastes. I’m either going to try something else or work on the components that I find too blocky. So if you see the theme changing sporadically on this blog, don’t fear, that’s just me testing.

I think one way to make the Akon theme look less “blocky” is to use a curved or rounded-edge image up top.

Then you could possibly do the same with the category headers. ;)

I don’t mind the top banner but rather the sidebar elements just feel a little blocky. I think I am going to try to do that with the category headers. It might not necessarily need rounded edges, maybe just shrinking the header sizes will do. I’ll have to test it all out and see.

Hey, just found your blog through John Chow… I noticed that you don’t have anything in the “title” variable of your blog. I would highly recommend putting something relevant in there if you’re interested in getting some traffic from the search engines.

You’re 100% correct. I had altered the title function in a previous installation of Wordpress and forgot to carry forward the change. Looks like I’ll have to go digging through old folder to remember what I did. Thanks for pointing that out.

That being said, not having a title on my homepage isn’t a big deal. All of my post pages have titles and that’s where the SE traffic gets directed. A properly optimized site will rarely get any SE referrals to their home page except searches for the company name and/or URL.
