What Did You Want To Be When You Were 12?

February 11th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Me? Around that time I wanted to be either an archaeologist, paleontologist or astronomer. Neither one of those really grabbed my interest in my later years so here I am as a webmaster.

But this post isn’t so much about me as it is about Paris Spence-Lang. John Chow brought him to my attention and he seems like a good kid. Paris had his own blog. 12 year old with a blog? Big deal right? But what makes his blog interesting is that his blog is about financial planning because when he grows up he wants to be a financial planner.

While he’s certainly got some SEO and ad placement issues (John points them out in his blog), he’s got something that a lot of blogs don’t. Compelling content. While I don’t know that all of his advice applies to me in my life, I do think he would have some great advice for the younger version of myself.

If you have even an ounce of entrepreneurial spirit in you, you have to admire the creativity and effort that Paris is putting forth.

Paris, if you read this, I wish you the best of luck in your efforts. My one bit of advice, get in touch with John Chow and ask him to give you a bit of help with the problems he pointed out on his blog. He’s a smart guy and if he’s willing to help, could teach you a lot.

That was like…6 years ago? I think I wanted to be a lawyer, but that changed, obviously.

It’s been a bit longer than that for me :) It is funny how for some of us it changes, yet I know other people who ended up doing what they wanted to do when they were 12. It would be interesting to find out what Paris is doing in 10 years or so. Stay tuned :)

HAHAHA! No kidding! Right before i wanted to be a financial advisor, I wanted to be a judge, but i figured out that unless you wanted to be a magistrate (and get payed LESS!) you had to be a lawyer so i wanted to be one… :D

Great to hear from you Paris. Don’t worry about it, your plans may change may yet still change. Pursue your dreams even if they change. I still don’t know what I want to be as I grow up. That’s after a degree and a bunch of years in the workforce doing something I enjoy.
