John Chow is always trying new and intriguing things on his blog to help growth and the generation of revenue.
His latest item of note is the competition that he’s spurring on a friendly competition amongst people who comment on his blog. The top bloggers are listed on his sidebar, providing a nice backlink. There’s been a lot of discussion in the comments of his thread on Making Money From A Blog - January 2007.
The question that many are asking is whether or not the competition is diluting the comments. While that’s definitely a concern, what John’s doing is actually very interesting. By essentially encouraging people to “spam” his comments with reasonable discussion, he’s significantly increasing his page views which helps with selling advertising and he’s also padding the unique content on his website which will ultimately help with catching the search engine long tail.
Overall it’s a very slippery slope, but a very interesting one indeed. John keeps pushing the envelope, purposely or not. I love it.
