Web Hosting

The aptly named Cheaphostingdirectory.com is a website covering cheap web hosting. They provide a nice list of web hosts right on their front page with details about their services in a handy tabular form. Disk space and data transfer are important factors but certainly not the only ones you should be looking at.

They’ve written an article about what you need to look for in a web host which covers some of the points I find important. The most important ones for me are customer service and simple upgrade paths. With my current host, 1and1, the upgrade paths are nice and simple. The customer service aspect is pretty much an unknown for me so far.

The key thing in web hosting is, as always, balancing out your specific needs with price. What will downtime cost you? What features do you need? I’m actually overpaying in terms of my bandwidth/disk space/MySQL accounts/e-mail accounts/etc… Unfortunately access to cronjobs and other things I needed were only included in the package I’m currently subscribed to.

They’ve also got a nice article on the top five questions to ask your web hosting company. Finding out whether they’re a re-seller or a core web hosting is important. The main reason is that you’re going to have a very different customer experience from each. The re-seller will likely have a more personal touch, but you’ll be going through a middle-man for your support. The core provider might give you sense of being one of the herd, but you’ll be dealing directly with the people who can help you with your problems. With all of that said, keep in mind that since you’ll be paying a bit more due to the middle-man, be sure that the service is worth it.

They’ve got a bunch of other articles on their website that you might want to read as well. when it comes down to it, the more you read about a topic, the more you’re going to get different perspectives which will help you understand the entirety of the issue at hand.

Did you followed these steps when you chose your current host?

I had a unique situation with my current host. I was with them on a promotion for 3 years for free. I got a lot of my answers on the fly as I used their service. I can definitely say that I will be asking these and many more questions of my next host :)
