Silly Mistakes Can Be Costly

February 3rd, 2007 · No Comments · Web Development

I recently fixed what I deem to be a silly mistake. It’s one that I’ve encountered and dealt with in the past which is why I found it to be a silly mistake.

Given that I harvest a lot of my traffic from Google , most of my incoming traffic (approx 90%) ends up on a blog post page and not my front page. The template I was working from didn’t show the sidebar when you went to a blog post page. So why is that a problem?

Given that those pages were significant entry pages, I wasn’t giving them a navigation bar to help them orient themselves. It felt like they’d hit an orphaned page. That’s not horrible for the user since they did end up getting to the content they wanted. But I lost out on an opportunity to further engage them with the rest of the website’s content.

The very simple addition of the sidebar to the template has since remedied that problem and my page views per visit are slowly on the increase. Learn from my mistake and make sure that all of your web pages are reasonable landing page because if you optimize your website for search engines, you’re likely to have most of your visitors coming in all over the place.
